Whether it is strawberry season or not, frozen or fresh strawberries, you are going to love this delicious energy boosting smoothie. And for those of you who are beet(root) haters, I promise you won’t even taste the beets in this one!! When it comes to making a smoothie packed with healthy ingredients and one that doesn’t taste like dirt, it is all about the balance of ingredients. No bananas in this you may say? I opt to sweeten with a little healthy mineral packed raw local honey, grape nectar, or date/s date syrup. My husband is allergic to bananas and I am not a fan of their overpowering very banana-ey flavour.
When it comes to protein in my smoothies, I also opt out of using protein powder. I opt to use seeds that are naturally high in protein and omega 3’s like hemp and chia seeds. I do use a little collagen powder however, not so much for protein as for my gut and skin health.
Ginger root, a powerful anti-inflammatory ingredient, is one of my smoothie add-in essentials. This is especially helpful if you are dealing with multiple auto-immune illnesses as I am. If you can try to buy organic ginger root. It find it tastes much better and is much brighter and deeper in colour (one of the indicators of freshness) than conventionally grown ginger root.
When it comes to milks, opt for unsweetened plant milks to limit added sugars.
Another way to pack even more nutrition, anti-oxidants, vitamins and anti-inflammatory ingredients is using freeze dried vegetable and fruit powders. My favourite source is Koyah.com . All of their powders are certified organic and freeze dried at the peak of ripeness. Acerola cherry powder is extremely high in vitamin C. One tiny scoop of the powder provides 200 % of your daily Vitamin C. Use code rocks&dirtbakery at Koyah.com for a discount.
