One of the first recipes I ever developed for my Instagram account was this recipe. In fact, it was my first recipe feature on a product website. One of the many things I love about hemp seed milk is that it is so quick and simple to make. Unlike nut milks, there is no pre-soaking required in order to make hemp seed milk. And with so many having nut allergies (myself to almonds), it is a wonderful, extremely nutritious sustainable alternative, full of omega fatty acids. Some are scared of hemp seeds thinking they may be too earthy, too grassy for a plant milk. Hemp seeds actually have a natural buttery taste and texture and make for a luscious milk. With the right combination or ingredients, they also make a silky and downright addictive chocolate milk.
The keys to a silky plant milk 1) use a high powered blender or the highest possible speed on your blender and blend until smooth 2) strain through a quality nut milk bag (my preferred method-visit “Products” section on my website) or cheesecloth. You will be left with some hemp seed residue in your nut milk bag, which you can use in other recipes or simply compost. If you chose not to strain/filter your plant milk it will spoil more quickly and will lack the silky smooth texture.

 4 cups filtered water
3 dates, soaked in warm water for at least 5 minutes
 ¾ cup hemp seeds/hearts
 ¼ tsp sea salt
2 tbsp cocoa powder or Dutch processed cocoa powder
 1 ½ tbsp maple syrup
 1 tsp vanilla extract

Add hemp seeds, soaked dates, water and sea salt to a high powered blender and blend on high for 2 minutes or until smooth and frothy. Pour milk through a nut milk bag or cheesecloth over top a wide bowl or jug. Gently squeeze/knead the milk through the nut milk bag. You will be left with some hemp seed residue in the bag. You could incorporate this into a smoothie, or crackers or just compost it.

Return filtered milk to blender and add vanilla, cocoa powder and maple syrup and blend for about 30 seconds or until smooth. Store in a glass container or pitcher. Shake well before pouring and store in the fridge for up to 3 days.
