My sister and her husband were on a cycling trip though the Alsace region of NE France and the brought me back some lovely mulled wine spices(éspices à vin chaud). I used them to make this comforting fall or winter compote. This can be made with apples too. I use it as a topping for porridge, yogurt and pancakes.
Add all of the ingredients to a medium saucepan and cook over medium heat until the pears breakdown and become soft, about 30 minutes. You may need to add more water depending on how firm/ripe your fruit is. Make sure the fruit still has some form and you do not want a mushy sauce
Store in a sealed glass jar in the refrigerator for up to a week.
