Nighty Night Lavender Milk

After learning that walnuts are a good source of tryptophan, which has been shown to help with sleep, I knew I had to make a night time lavender infused milk with walnuts. I have struggled with sleep problems for many years now, and I appreciate the relaxing powers of lavender. I've always enjoyed a warm drink before bed, be it chamomile tea or hot chocolate. This bedtime drink reminds me of my love of those kinds of comforting beverages. Make sure to use culinary lavender in this recipe. We have several lavender farms nearby so thankfully culinary lavender is readily found nearby. You can find culinary lavender on-line as well. Walnuts are one of my favourite nuts, they are native to much of North America, Southern Europe and parts of Asia. So they are a sustainable nut. Cinnamon is also another sleep aid, plus the delicate flavour it adds to the milk is lovely. I have a little of this milk a few hours before bed and so far it really seems to help me feel more drowsy. Be sure to soak your walnuts in water for at least 6 hours. I haven't found a better, sturdier nut milk bag. Prep time does not include soaking the walnuts overnight or steeping the lavender in the prepared milk overnight. Trust me it sounds like a lot of time to prepare but it is just takes pre planning, The actual making of this milk takes just 10 minutes or less. Trust me, its worth it! It tastes soooooo good! Think of it as a nutritious bedtime treat. If you just want to make walnut milk, reduce the soaked dates to 3 and leave out the lavender. You don't have to reserve this for bedtime you can enjoy it any time of the day. I even tried some with some rice cereal and it tasted so yummy!

 1 cup Raw Walnuts
 4 cups Filtered Water1 litre
 4 Medjool Dates, soaked in hot water for 5 minutes then pitted
 ¾ tsp Ground Cinnamon
 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
 ¼ tsp Sea Salt
 2 tsp Whole Culinary Lavender(the flower stalks)

Soak the walnuts in water for at least 6 hours or overnight. Drain the water and then rinse. Place the walnuts, filtered water, sea salt, vanilla, cinnamon and soaked dates in a high powered blender and blend on high for about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes.


Strain the milk through a nut milk bag over a wide mouthed container. Gently knead and push the milk through the nut milk bag into your container. Add the lavender to the strained nut milk; shake.


Store the nut milk in glass jars and allow the lavender to infuse for at least 8 hours or overnight. Strain out the lavender and enjoy before bed or anytime of the day. There will be some separation so be sure to shake well before drinking.
